Merry Xmas

This weekend the Cartoonists' Forum Cartoon Competition asked for a cartoon using the caption - "It's exactly what I have always wanted."

Merry Xmas to one and all.

[Later: This one won second place. So that's quite nice]

Kitchen Sink

This week the Cartoonists' Forum Cartoon Competition asked for a cartoon using the caption - "I can't help feeling I'm missing something."

This is mine.

Pantomime

I had to complete this in a tearing hurry ("Oh no you didn't!"), but still fell victim to a computer monitor reluctant to wake up after a few days rest. As a consequence, I was too late to join the plethora of pantomime horse jokes in this weekend's Cartoonists' Forum Competition on the theme of - Pantomime.

Why?

After a long lay off due to problems with my eye, I'm back in the Cartoonists' Forum Competition. This week we've been asked for a cartoon using the caption - "Why?"

Shadow

Mota Tamer (mixed media)

This week, Illustration Friday asked for something on the theme of Shadow. Here's a cover I did for the fanzine MOTA in 1977, given the once over in Photoshop. Posted here in memory of my old mate, Terry Hughes.

Creature

For some reason notifications of new subjects are not arriving in my email inbox from Illustration Friday. As a result, I have no time to do something new for this week's challenge - Creature. I hope this will suffice.

Fun

I came across the original of this cartoon today and whizzed it through Photoshop.

Lush

Lush (Black marker and digital colour)

There are still lots of things preventing me from working on a regular basis, but today I digitally coloured this old (1994) drawing to submit it to Illustration Friday for this week's challenge - Lush.

Surveillance

In an attempt to get back into practice, here's my offering for this week's Illustration Friday challenge - Surveillance

I've used an old fanzine cover which started life with a background by Sheryl Birkhead, had a figure added by me and now has digital colour added. I acknowledge there's a little clunky corner in the lower right of the background where I had to take out the issue number - must do better.

Lent

My contribution to last weekend's Cartoonists' Forum, using the set caption "I see Alex has given up [blank] for Lent", the word in brackets being the choice of the cartoonist.

Super Noddy

(Ballpoint pen and digital colour)

In my early days of cartooning, I had a particular fascination with various incarnations of Little Noddy. Looking through some old papers today, I came across this survivor of that period and gave it a bit of Photoshop colour.

Swim

This week, Illustration Friday asked for something on the subject of Swim.

This is a heading from an old fanzine of mine called Snorkel, adapted and coloured, in the nick of time.

Eye Glasses

It's a while since I posted anything on Illustration Friday, so when they announced their challenge this week - Eye Glasses - I thought I'd bring this one up from the vaults. It's a slightly altered version of an earlier cartoon, replacing the caption with a sign within the cartoon itself.

Hats

This week's challenge from the Cartoonists' Forum was a wordless cartoon on the subject of Hats.

Saturday 2 March 2013

Obsession

As the winner of last week's Cartoonists' Forum Competition, I got to choose the subject for this week's. I decided on a theme, with or without caption, of Obsession, and this is my entry.

The Good Life

(Black marker, digital colour)

Richard Briers, much loved and wonderfully talented comic actor, died this week. As a tribute, the choice for this week's Cartoonists' Forum Competition is The Good Life, the title of his best known television sitcom.

[Later] This cartoon earned me First Place in the Competition!

Saturday 16 February 2013

Crime Scene

This week the Cartoonists' Forum set a theme of Crime Scene as the subject of their Competition.

[Later] Another Second Place winner.

Wheel

Wheelboat (Marker, digital colour)

You may have seen this before when I posted it in 2010.  It's some time since I've submitted anything to Illustration Friday and in the absence of something fresh for this week's subject - Wheel - I thought I'd enter this one.

Complain

It's nice to get the opportunity to trot out Dr Frankenstein and friend again. The Cartoonists' Forum Competition this week gave me that opportunity to do just that when they asked for a cartoon using the set caption "I really don't like to complain but..."

[Later] Voted into second place!

No Idea

Today's challenge from the Cartoonists' Forum Competition is to provide a cartoon using the set caption "I had no idea [BLANK] could be used like that!", where the "[BLANK]" can be replaced with a word or words of our own choosing.
